Art Deco period heavy wood folding screen hand-painted in Asian style in 1928 with a multitude of highly detailed birds in natural setting by American artist, illustrator, cartographer and muralist Stuart Travis (1868-1942). The piece is signed on the extreme right panel ‘Stuart Travis – 1928’.
The screen has a large border with partly Asian decorative motif and inserted medallions with birds. The lower right corner appears to have been left in a semi-unfinished state by the artist.

Stuart Travis studied art at the Academie Julian in Paris and subsequently established himself in New York City where he became known as illustrator, designer, cartographer and muralist. He is known for his murals which adorned the interiors of ocean liners of the White Star Line as well as public buildings. He also did Vogue Magazine cover illustrations as well as illustrations for other magazines, books and advertisements.
In 1928 Travis was invited to paint a mural at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. After completion of the mural, Travis stayed on as the academy’s resident artist until his death.
This might explain the unfinished status of this screen, which is dated from the year of his leaving New York for Andover.
