Magnificent!
Polished Walnut & Paldao Veneers
1950
“The Gift That Starts a Home!”
This is one of the most marvelous Lane Cedar Chests we have ever encountered! It is absolutely amazing and beyond beautiful! Hope Chests were a staple of American Life and were the symbol of future happiness for women for the first half of the twentieth century. All woolen valuables like blankets, sweaters and linens were at risk in normal closets and chests, but in a cedar chest would be preserved for your future life and home. Girls would keep their most sacred treasures in Lane Cedar Hope Chests, which were the finest in the world.
Made of 3 quarter inch government recommended cedar, with a patented automatic tray and felt lining, the Lane chests were incredible feats of workmanship. Better than a Rolls-Royce the veneers used in a Lane Cedar Chest were finished with exacting precision, waterproof and guaranteed not to peel!
This 1950 example is a modern extravaganza with a waterfall top, walnut and Paldao wood, which was later made famous as the wood of choice for Porsche interiors!
It’s simply stunning!
They don’t make furniture like this anymore, no matter what you spend. The skills, materials, workmanship, tools and techniques have been lost or degraded. This was a Hope Chest, but now it is really a Treasure Chest because its value is as high as what’s put inside it!
The symmetry of the design is superb! The fit and finish astound anyone unfamiliar with quality furnishings of the twentieth century.
In very fine vintage condition. Much better than age appropriate wear. It has wear more appropriate for furniture of 20 years of age, but not 74! The finest example we have come across. Several chips and minor gouges, but most of these show significantly more wear. The wood is lustrous and this one is a true showpiece!
Presents spectacularly!
A must have addition to your NY penthouse, Palm Springs Atomic ranch or West Palm Beach estate!
