This came from the famous Boston (North End) restaurant ‘Joe Tecce’s’ which closed in 2010 after nearly 50 years, a casualty of the Big Dig project.
This directory was already a piece of architectural salvage when the restaurant started using it as a sign to display their menu and entertainment posters.
The frame holds two rectangular framed glass panels (frames within the frame) which slide up and out when changing the announcement.
Would also make a wonderful table top if mounted with legs or placed on top of a small table.
All together it is quite heavy; at least 50 pounds.
The individual framed panels are hefty but not heavy. They each weigh about as much as a laptop.
Certainly it would be manageable for one person to change the announcements daily or even a couple times daily.
The backside of each framed panel is a black felt covered board which comes out and stays in place by moving the two horizontal brass bars.
To remove the framed panels, assuming the main directory frame is secured to a wall, simply push against the glass with an upward motion to raise the framed panel up then pull it out of its slot.
Undo the brass clips to remove the black felt board. Pin your letters or announcement to the felt then clip it back onto the framed panel then reinsert into the main frame. Repeat for the other panel.
