Bronze dancer, circa1930. Sculpture with black patina, by MARNIX D’HAVELOOSE (1885-1973). This classically interpreted nude dancer is rendered in an elegant Art Deco style. The signature is on the base. This is an important bronze in a Classic pose, standing with arms stretched. M. D’Haveloose is a listed Belgian artist documented in both of the most important books on Belgian artists including his biography, with photos listing work and showing a similar period life-like statue in front of a museum associated with the artist
His work can be found listed in many important international auctions. Like many typical great Belgian artists, he is not as famous as his French counterparts but certainly, in this case, the work reflects a deep understanding of form, physicality, artistry and detail. The quality of the work and the foundry are really impressive. We have had a few pieces by this artist using this same model working towards an interpretation of both dance and form.
