This very massive, exceptional mortar is hand carved from a lovely rust couloured iron wood. It was made in the 19th century on the African continent, possibly in Ghana. The bowl’s surface is rough and very detailed. The underside of the foot is interestingly texturized aswell, showing the natural shape and character of the material. Its inside is smoothly oval shaped with a narrower bottom than top. The accompanying mortar stick has been hand carved, like the bowl, and is thicker on both ends to ensure longeivety.
