Stanislav V’Soske (1899-1983) was originally trained as a painter at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. In the mid 20’s he co-founded with his brothers a carpet workshop in Grand Rapids (Michigan), at first focusing on hooked rugs, concentrating then on developing new techniques for hand-tufting. He was one of the first to introduce designs as a function of texture, as he originated hand-carving in rugs and developed new ways of varying the surface of carpeting in tufted, incised and modelled patterns exactly like on the rug offered here, where the scalloped border is obtained by carefully hand-clipping the open field as well as the contours of the wave border.
He won numerous awards, and has obtained prestigious commissions such as the Green Room in the White House. His rugs and tapestries have been exhibited in many galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art In New York, which commissioned some of his work for its permanent collection.
